by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen
First published in 1988, this book by artist and photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen still holds an evocative relevance today although it was taken in the Newcastle area of Byker during the 1970's. Sirkka-Liisa lived in Byker and took photos almost immediately after arriving there from Finland, encapsulating a north east town struggling to survive post Industrial Revolution. Though there is no shying away from the poverty, Konttinen brings humanity to her subjects while conveying humour, sadness and family.
Sirrka-Liisa's photography will feature in BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art's summer exhibition 'Idea of the North' from 11th May - 30th September 2018.
