by Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen
Photographer and Artist, Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen spent time living in Byker in Newcastle during the 1970's and her evocative images of everyday life and struggle were highly received and culminated in a book published in 1988 documenting life in the inner city electoral ward. Konttinen stayed in contact with her friends in Byker and, when she returned, would continue to document life and the people in this disadvantaged but distinctive area. Sirkka-Liisa's affinity and warmth for the Byker residents shines through the new photographs and gives a wonderful insight into the development of the character of the people and area during the time since the 1970's. A must for people interested in social history and the north east.
