  • Now a pretty coastal village, Askam-in-Furness was a much different place in 1982.

Askam-in-Furness was founded in 1850 when iron ore deposits were found in the area and mining became the main industry. These mines started to close in the early 20th Century creating and by the 1980s the village was much neglected with and rife with poverty. Photographer and social documentary maker, Chris Killip, visited in 1982 and captured this moment in its history taking images that are both beautiful and illuminating on how village life was then. This book features the people and places of Askam-in-Furness and is an important snap shot of social history.

    Small book with 32 pages.
