THIS EDITION IS NOW SOLD OUT
Little and Spicy - following on from his hugely popular exhibition Young man red at BALTIC in 2014, Jesse Wine has created an exclusive limited edition artwork an edition of seven, as part of the BALTIC Edition series.
The artwork comprises a snail, two cups and the Sports Direct logo, each representative of different ideas: the snail a nod to artist Ken Price and the Californian art scene, the double cup rendering any function of the cup impractical, and the Sports Direct logo referencing the everydayness of this object and its relationship with the North East.
Jesse Wine (born Chester, 1983) works mainly with ceramics, using traditional techniques to explore form and the process of making. Wine never records his methods, mixing glazes and oxides together and firing at different temperatures with uncertain outcomes; colours melt and blend and structures collapse and fold in on themselves. The final work is thus the result of happenstance, from lopsided vessels with shiny metallic glazes to disfigured self-portrait head sporting a variety of contemporary accessories, belts and bobble hats.
