Oh we do love to be beside the seaside!
A visit to the beach can bring out the kid in all of us, especially these ladies, captured beautifully by Finnish photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen having fun in Whitley Bay in 1978. Konttinen has spent a lot of her life residing and photographing the heart of the north east and this poster image is taken from her Writing in the Sand series of pictures showing north easterners and their exploits at the coast. In this case the reaction you feel when you get hitch up your skirt and feel the sand between your toes. This photograph features in the Idea of North, exhibiting at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art as part of the Great Exhibition of the North throughout the summer. Sirkka-Liisa has curated Women by Women which celebrates women photographers of the north and the humanity of their subjects.
