'The thing to be in 1983 is handsome' Morrissey.
In 1983, Manchester band The Smiths hadn't released an album yet and were touring the country shaking up the music world with their alternative style of music and eccentric, challenging front man Morrissey. US Graphic Designer Mike Joyce is not the drummer from the Smiths but is very influenced by the era of punk, hardcore rock and indie in his print designs. Taking concert flyers from real gigs (in this case when The Smiths played at the Venue in London), Joyce creates Swiss Typographical style prints which invoke a healthy nostalgia for a specific musical past while embracing modern forms creating beautiful artworks full of energy and anarchy. Rather like those early Smiths years themselves.
