A quaint work of piety (in memory of Joseph Crawhall II) - is a new Xylograph (woodcut) crafted by Ant Macari especially for BALTIC.
While neither pure technical production nor pure creation in the romantic sense, Art Macari's work is simultaneously striking and richly poetic. In this latest work Macari manages to bring a fresh contemporary look to the traditional art of the woodcut.
A quaint work of piety could refer equally the the work of Crawhill or Macari. Like Macari, Joseph Crawhall II was a man of many talents, an illustrator, wood engraver, writer, and patron of the arts, based in the North East.
