A beautiful photo journal of one Finnish photographer's time in the north east.
Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen arrived in Byker in the 1970s and quickly took the area and people to her heart. She began to document her surroundings by taking hundreds of photos and, in doing so, captured a particular moment in a northern community where times were moving on and social mores were changing. The book to accompany her 6 years in the Newcastle area was published in 1983 yet still has resonance with people who recognise the upbringing, their family, the kids they played with on the streets and the working class culture the photographs evoke. A photographic classic happily available again.
