The first substantial monograph on the work of feminist, activist, social documentary photographer Franki Raffles (1955–1994), comprising an expanded introduction by Baltic Director Sarah Munro and scholarly texts by Alistair Scott, Associate Professor in the School of Arts and Creative Industries at Edinburgh Napier University, and Catherine Spencer, Senior Lecturer in the School of Art History at the University of St. Andrews – authorities on Raffles’ work. The publication accompanies Raffles’ first major retrospective exhibition organised by Baltic, presented in Gateshead from 11 May 2024 – 16 March 2025. Designed by Fraser Muggeridge studio.

A blast from the past

Frankie took my photo in 1982 and it was featured under Lewis women. Wish I had seen the exhibition but the book is well put together and will be a great keepsake for the memory of Frankie, who tragically died pursuing her cause.

The book was wonderful, thought provoking, inspirational and beautifully put together. It included brilliant text, all the photographs from the excellent exhibition of Franki’s work, plus more. An amazing tribute to Franki and a magnificent achievement by Sarah Munro and the team at Baltic and everyone else involved in bringing it into the world for all to see.
