“Twenty odd years ago I made an etching of a tree which I called ‘The Appointment’. I often wondered what the appointment was? I often wondered why I titled it so. I had in mind a feel of a ghost story by M R James or one of Thomas Hardy’s short stories of doomed love and early death. Perhaps the appointment was simply with the future. Perhaps that is why I couldn’t escape calling this lithograph of a similar ageing tree, ‘The Disappointment’.”
