John Hollington Design is a studio based in York making high quality homewares and garden accessories. John’s background in engineering and love of modern design can be clearly seen in the products he creates using beautiful materials in a responsible and sustainable way. BALTIC Shop has stocked the John Hollington Corten birdhouse since 2016, welcoming new designs recently including three differently treated cedar. John Hollington’s bird boxes show that you don’t have to leave good design at the back door – it can head into the garden too!

We asked John about his inspiration and design ethos as well as what he thinks about living in the north!

'We're a Yorkshire-based designer maker studio whose designs are inspired by the careful minimalism and abstract geometrical forms of modernist art and architecture and we produce ethical, sustainable pieces, based on a cradle-to-cradle philosophy.

I am very fortunate living in the north with an abundance of inspiring works by the likes of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Anthony Gormley on my doorstep. I love the mix of vibrant cities and the accessibility of the beautiful countryside, hills and moors.'
